The Citadel of Salah El-Din: Cairo’s Legendary Fortress

The Citadel of Salah El-Din, also known as the Cairo Citadel, is one of Egypt’s most iconic historic landmarks. Perched on the Mokattam Hills overlooking Cairo, the Citadel has stood as a symbol of power, defense, and architectural brilliance for more than eight centuries. Built in the 12th century by the great Muslim leader Salah El-Din (Saladin), the fortress was designed to protect Cairo from Crusader attacks and became the center of Egyptian governance for centuries.

Today, the Citadel remains one of the most visited attractions in Cairo, offering visitors a unique journey through Islamic history, stunning architecture, and breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

The History of the Citadel

Construction of the Citadel began in 1176 AD under the rule of Salah El-Din, the legendary leader who founded the Ayyubid dynasty in Egypt. The fortress was strategically built on a high rocky hill to provide a strong defensive position and a clear view over Cairo and its surroundings.

Over the centuries, the Citadel served as the seat of government for many Egyptian rulers, including the Ayyubids, the Mamluks, and later the Ottomans. It remained the political and military center of Egypt for nearly 700 years until the 19th century when Egypt’s rulers moved their headquarters to other palaces.

Many of the structures inside the Citadel today were built during the Mamluk and Ottoman periods, reflecting the rich layers of Egypt’s Islamic architectural heritage.

Shery Tours Egypt: Mosque of mohamed ali

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali

One of the most famous landmarks within the Citadel is the magnificent Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Built between 1830 and 1848 by Muhammad Ali Pasha, the founder of modern Egypt, the mosque dominates the Citadel’s skyline with its large central dome and elegant twin minarets.

Often called the “Alabaster Mosque,” the interior walls are decorated with beautiful alabaster panels, while the vast prayer hall features ornate chandeliers and impressive Ottoman-style architecture inspired by the mosques of Istanbul.

From the mosque’s courtyard, visitors can enjoy one of the most spectacular panoramic views of Cairo, stretching from the historic districts to the distant pyramids on clear days.

Panoramic Views Over Cairo

One of the most unforgettable experiences at the Citadel is the breathtaking view over Cairo. From the fortress walls and open courtyards, visitors can see the vast city stretching across the Nile Valley, including historic mosques, bustling neighborhoods, and modern skyscrapers.

On clear days, the Pyramids of Giza can even be seen on the horizon, reminding visitors of Egypt’s timeless historical legacy.

Other Important Monuments Inside the Citadel

The Citadel complex contains several historic mosques, palaces, and museums that tell the story of Cairo’s rich past. Among them are the Mosque of Al-Nasir Muhammad, a remarkable Mamluk-era mosque known for its elegant columns and unique design, and the Mosque of Suleiman Pasha, one of the earliest Ottoman mosques built in Egypt.

Visitors can also explore the Military Museum and the Police Museum, which showcase Egypt’s military and security history through various artifacts, weapons, and historical exhibits.
