Islamic Cairo - Cairo

Islamic Cairo is one of the most historically rich districts in Cairo and one of the largest collections of medieval Islamic architecture in the world. The area developed after the founding of Cairo in the 10th century and became a major center of Islamic learning, culture, trade, and religious life.

History of Islamic Cairo

Islamic Cairo began to flourish during the rule of the Fatimid Caliphate when the city of Cairo was founded in 969 AD. The area expanded during later dynasties including the Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans.

For centuries, the district served as the political, cultural, and religious heart of Egypt. Scholars, merchants, and travelers from across the Islamic world gathered here, making it one of the most vibrant urban centers in the Middle East.

Many of the monuments built during the Mamluk period are still standing today, giving visitors a rare glimpse into the architectural and cultural heritage of medieval Islamic civilization

Architecture and Culture

The architecture of Islamic Cairo reflects a mix of artistic influences from different Islamic dynasties. Visitors can see beautiful stone carvings, wooden mashrabiyas, ornate domes, towering minarets, and intricate geometric decorations.

Walking through the narrow streets of the district feels like traveling back in time. The sound of the call to prayer, the scent of traditional cafés, and the vibrant markets create a unique atmosphere that blends history with everyday life.

Khan El-Khalili Bazaar

Khan el-Khalili is the most famous traditional market in Egypt and one of the oldest bazaars in the Middle East. Located in the heart of Islamic Cairo near Al-Azhar Mosque, the market dates back to the 14th century during the Mamluk period.

History of the Bazaar

The market was established in 1382 by the Mamluk emir Jaharkas Al-Khalili, from whom the bazaar takes its name. Originally, the area served as a large caravanserai (a trading hub where merchants and travelers could rest while trading goods).

Over time, it evolved into Cairo’s main commercial marketplace, attracting traders from Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

Cultural Experience

Beyond shopping, Khan El-Khalili offers a unique cultural atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy traditional cafés such as the famous El Fishawi Cafe, which has served guests for more than two centuries.

The bazaar is lively throughout the day, but it becomes especially vibrant in the evening when the lantern shops glow and the cafés fill with locals and travelers.

Al-Hakim Mosque (Mosque of Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah)

Al-Hakim Mosque is one of the largest and most historically important mosques in Cairo. Located at the northern end of Al-Muizz Street near the ancient gate Bab al-Futuh, the mosque represents a remarkable example of early Islamic architecture from the Fatimid period.

The mosque is officially known as the Mosque of Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, named after the Fatimid caliph who completed its construction in the early 11th century.

Throughout history, the mosque served different roles. During certain periods it was used as a madrasa (Islamic school), a fortress, and even a warehouse before later restorations returned it to its religious function.
