Colossi of Memnon - Luxor
The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues standing proudly on the west bank of the Nile River in Luxor. These ancient giants have silently watched over the Theban necropolis for more than 3,400 years, making them one of Egypt’s most iconic and mysterious landmarks.
Historical Background
The Colossi were constructed during the reign of Amenhotep III in the 18th Dynasty. Each statue represents the pharaoh seated on his throne, facing east toward the rising sun and the Nile River.
Over time, earthquakes damaged the statues—especially the northern one, which became famous in ancient times for producing a mysterious “singing” sound at dawn. This phenomenon attracted visitors from across the ancient world, including Greek and Roman travelers.
The name “Memnon” was given later by the Greeks, who associated the statues with their mythological hero Memnon.
Architectural Features
Each statue stands about 18 meters (60 feet) tall and weighs approximately 720 tons. They are carved from blocks of quartzite sandstone transported from quarries near Cairo.

The “Singing” Phenomenon
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Colossi is the ancient legend of the “singing statue.”
After an earthquake in 27 BC, the northern statue began emitting a whistling or humming sound at sunrise. Ancient visitors believed it was the voice of Memnon greeting his mother, the goddess Eos (the dawn).
The sound eventually stopped after Roman restoration efforts, but the legend remains an important part of the site’s mystique.
